Vaudevillehandling

Ingen behöver påminnas om att vår värld just nu styrs av länder som balanserar på en allt slakare lina mellan sin bekännelse till demokrati och sin faktiska hantering av densamma. Det gör i sammanhanget en väldigt liten skillnad om våra så kallade rättighetsväktare är inspirerade av höger- eller vänsterideologier. Grindarna till det totalitära fängelset är lika ogenomträngliga, övervakningen lika rigorös, ledardyrkan lika genomträngande, gudshyllandet lika bedövande. Storebror ser inte på oss för att Storebror väljer att göra det. Vi har gett Storebror rätten att se oss. När en befolkning blir distraherad av trivialiteter, när kulturlivet omdefinieras till att bli en evig karusell av nöjen, då det allvarliga offentliga samtalet blir en form av infantilismens kakafoni, då, kort sagt, blir folket en publik, och deras politiska handlingar en vaudevillehandling, EU:s nationer befinner sig i riskzonen; kulturdöden är idag en klar möjlighet.

Next the statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting the blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception.

Vredens druvor

John Steinbeck skrev Vredens druvor, han skrev om ångest och lidande, om människor som drevs från Oklahoma, som under den stora depressionen var tvungna att flytta till Kalifornien för att dryga ut sina inkomster genom att agera gårdsarbetare och plockare. De uthärdade hjärtskärande fattigdom, sjukdom, svält, död och brutalitet från poliser längs med vägen mot Kalifornien. Åtta decennier senare och USA har fortfarande inte lärt sig någonting. Deras form av selektiv kapitalism dödar, hur många olyckor måste uthärdas för att det ska avslöjas att det är ett irrationell styrsystemet? När byter vi system, innan dess väsen kväver oss?


Och det handlar inte bara om olja och gas eller jordbruksmark; dessa element är en del av symptombilden. Kapitalismens mandat är nämligen expansionspolitikens, som i sin tur föreskriver konflikt och krig. Någon måste just därför se till att USA:s kollisionskurs med Ryssland kring den påhittade Ukrainakrisen avstyrs. Som en effekt av den kapitalistiska logiken kan nämligen denna kris, tygellös, lätt leda till ett krig, större än många tidigare. En del av skälen till att underkuva östra Ukraina är att ge plats för mer olja- och gasutvinning, en utvinning som sköts av företag utan lojaliteter till någon nation. Cirkeln är komplett. Vredens druvor är idag internationella. Människor är inte värda något, allt som premieras är framställning av klibbiga bitar papper som kallas dollar. Visst kan vi människor bättre än så?
